In September 2004, I set out on a journey into cattle country to talk with grassroots producers about how they have been affected by the closed border. Most of the people I interviewed are determined to weather this crisis. Some are not so sure and asked that their stories not be printed. A few have decided to leave the industry or were forced out of business by circumstances or creditors no longer willing to take a risk on their operation. What I came away with is a series of interviews that focus on the people who are steadfast in their belief of the industry's future.
The result is an honest talk with cattle men and women about their operations and their lives. Traditionally, ranch people are private, stoic and not often willing to discuss their worries -especially regarding finances and their ability to provide. The people in these pages are industry leaders -everyday cattle producers who have helped put a face on this crisis and in doing so, will help others understand.
